BLOG ENTRY 3 0F 3

The site which we will be visiting is St Francis Basilica in Assissi, Italy. This is a church that was dedicated to St Francis, it is built in his hometown and has the body of Saint Francis in a stone crypt below the church where people can go a pray and look at him.

Map of Assisi, ItalyThousands of people visit this site a year and they are all doing this for their various reasons. The town is Assissi is a country town in the middle of Italy. It is the persect place to relax and come closer to God.

The Church says that this may be a site to visit on a pilgrimage because it reflects on the chosen saint and because it is in a holy place (church) there is reverence shown and reflections are ideal.

From visiting this site I hope to learn more about St Francis and more about his hometown and life. I also hope to learn what his living conditions were like and how muh of an inspration he is to the village, by talking to the locals, visiting his house and going to some of the places he went that had a role in him becomming a saint.

The Importance of the Pilgrimage Site to Christians

Identify and explain the importance of the pilgrimage site to Christians

BLOG ENTRY 1 OF 3
A pilgramige a journey that is taken for spiritual purposes to strengthen the relationship between the person and God.

There are a number of reasons why Christians go on a Pilgrimage. Some include:
  • To see the saint or saints tomb – Most locations where a Pilgrimage takes place has a famous Saint buried there.
  • Strengthening the relationship with God- Going on a Pilgrimage strengthens the relationship with the person and the chosen saint-
  • People are inspired- Usually a saint is from a village where everyone knows everyone. When people see that someone like them has gone all the way to become a saint they are inspired and believe that god is working in the town and has a special presence.
  • To renew their faith – People looking to find hope in their lives or good luck, go on a pilgrimage to a Marian site or sacred place to draw upon the good will of God.
Pilgrimages strengthen the relationship with God and are a way to escape the chaotic world and come back to God for inspiration and guidance. The site that the person may be visiting is a calm place in a small village in the mountains or the humble churches in the city.
